OUR STORY
We the Jigawa Library Project team believes that every child ought to have adequate access to reading materials in other to position themselves to compete with their counterparts across the globe. Access to books and reading materials paves the way for creativity, innovation and resourcefulness in children. Access to books and reading materials also enable children to have quality education in line with the UN SDG4 (Quality Education).
Our vision is to create access to reading materials through the establishment of libraries and reading clubs in 16 Senior Secondary Schools in Jigawa State Nigeria.
Shortly after service began, we explored ways of giving back to our host community. They clearly had a lot of needs but we could not provide solutions to them all. We began giving tutorials to underprivileged children. We tutored them on Maths and English and we read together with them.
In the beginning there was no visible improvement in their speaking and reading ability. They seemed eager to learn and yet always seemed to forget what they had been taught.
We tried incentives; sweets, pens, biscuits and exercise books. Their interest was piqued but this as well did not yield the result we desired. It was one day while we taught them that one of the children opened up and told us that it was because she didn’t have textbooks that she was not performing at optimal level.
At the time, Aisha, the girl in question could not add 20 + 50, and she was in JSS3.
We provided a maths text book to her and 2 months later she could not only add and subtract but could multiply, divide and solve complex mathematical equations. Aisha was never a dull student, she just didn’t have a maths text book.
We were curious about the situation. We reasoned that if Aisha had such a challenge as a student in a government secondary school, whether there were other students with similar needs. We then conducted a research and found out that the access to books and critical materials are low in public secondary schools in Jigawa.
We began this project in order to curb the challenge of poor access to books through the creation of libraries and the poor reading culture through the creation of reading clubs.
We are currently working with 16 schools in 3 Local Governments in Jigawa State;

Gumel LGA
