“A house is more than a container.”
Since 2014, 3,000 internally displaced people have lived in self-constructed temporary shelters in a camp allocated to them in Durmi. These small and shabbily-constructed shelters were built during the height of the emergency and were intended to last a short while. Unfortunately, this period has stretched to a painful four years so that shanties made of layered polythene sheets and cheap wood have now become deadly residences. This proposal aims to address this problem and highlight the need for decent housing.
“Decent housing saves lives.”
Comfortable outlines a temporary shelter project. Revolving around the IDPs, the aim of the project is to create a satisfactory and affordable solution to a chronic issue by providing housing units that not only fit contextually but also empower the inhabitants of the camp. The proposed timeline of the project is a year (spanning between September 2018 and July 2019). The goal is to construct 20 units in an IDP camp allocated in Durumi.
