Children with epilepsy in Nigeria face profound challenges in accessing essential seizure medications, primarily due to financial barriers. Epilepsy, a neurological disorder characterized by recurrent seizures, significantly impacts the lives of affected children and their families. The inability to afford medication exacerbates their condition, leading to increased frequency and severity of seizures, reduced quality of life, and heightened social stigma (SDGs 3). Caring for children with disabilities, especially in Africa, is often financially burdensome, and many parents struggle to afford essential medications such as Tegretol, Epilim, and Keppra due to their high cost. Consequently, these families are unable to provide their children with the necessary seizure drugs, further exacerbating their health challenges and hindering their overall well-being.
I believe that every individual deserves a chance to reach their full potential, and I am dedicated to making that a reality for those in this situation. It is a well-known fact that disability management is quite expensive in Africa due to costly medications, care, and poor economics, leaving most individuals and parents living with disabilities impoverished and depressed. I believe children living with disabilities can thrive with the right support. This project aims to address these challenges by providing one month of free seizure medications to 30 families with children experiencing seizures or epilepsy. Each family will receive a one-month supply of medication, ensuring access to life-saving treatment over an extended period without the burden of cost. By ensuring access to these essential medications, the project seeks to alleviate the financial strain on families, mitigate the adverse effects of epilepsy, and improve the overall health and well-being of affected children (SDG 3).
• Improved access to seizure medications for 30 families. • Enhanced well-being and reduced financial strain on parents/caregivers. • Increased awareness about the importance of medication adherence in the community. • Potential reduction in the number of seizures experienced by children.
