In 2019, Educating Africa launched a project to provide free and quality education for underprivileged girls of secondary school age in Nigeria. That project successfully put smiles on the faces of Emmanuella, Gift, Faith and Hope, their parents and many other students & stakeholders in the local community.

This feat was possible because of your support, and we were able to raise over £3,000 to help the girls actualise their dreams of going to school. Because of your kind donations, these girls have completed two years of education despite the impact of the pandemic.

Tuition fee project

In two years, we are glad to see that we exceeded our community goals. We paid full tuition fees for our girls, as well as provided uniform, after school tuition, textbooks, personal hygiene care packages during the holiday seasons, and also COVID-19 relief packages and revision resources packs for the girls and their families.

Workshops

Additionally, we delivered impactful workshops with topics ranging from personal hygiene, cyberbullying and online safety. Through our beneficiaries in the host school, we also ensured that our training workshops and mentoring sessions impact other young girls in the community at large.

Mentoring

We launched our mentoring sessions to impact young girls in our partner school. This led to the delivery of a role model session hosted by Ventures park where the girls received talks from successful STEM role models.

Computing Hub

The computer hub was set up in May, 2021 at the school of our beneficiaries, with donations from our well-wishers. The funds available could only get us five laptops for a start and we’ve had basic computer training and coding sessions for both students and teachers in the school.

We also secured a partnership with TechHer NG in Abuja to provide them access to our training material likewise TechHer will also provide technical support to the Computing Hub where requested and necessary.

Sports kits

Finally, we partnered with KitAid and delivered sports jerseys to the school students and local teams in Abuja & Lagos. This led to one of the teams being retweeted by a premier league footballer.

As we advance, we are looking to expand our reach through the existing projects as well as create an impact in other countries including Ghana & Tanzania.

We aim to achieve our vision by undertaking the following:

Tuition fee project

We aim to expand our current tuition fee numbers by expanding the numbers available and providing access to tuition fees and other needs as we have done in the past. This will be continued in Abuja Nigerian as well as any other states/ countries of need.

In Ghana, we aim to provide disadvantaged girls with access to grant uniforms, after school tuition & skills training that prevent them from completing their education.

Basic hygiene provision

Due to one of our project missions, and the awareness that young girls are in dire need of sanitary pads and body care essentials. For such a project, more resources will be needed to actualize our goal in providing the schoolgirls with personal hygiene items inclusive of sanitary pads (which will be made available at schools), body essentials like cream & soap, body sprays and perfumes.

Computing hub expansion -

We aim to provide more access to digital skills by improving our computing hub by procuring 10 more computers, a display, an AC, desks and chairs and consistent access to data. This has the potential to impact the entire local community in Mpape, Abuja as well as other communities as we will be able to visit other schools locally and regionally.

Computing skills training

With reference to our first training outing in Abuja, we could tell the in-depth impact it had on the students. What we have in mind for the next phase is to expand our training and computer skills on a monthly/quarterly basis. However, we have got a crucial call to offer digital skill training to some community kids in the Makoko region of Lagos state. This entire community is constructed on water and it comes with a whole lot of challenges, which is why we are counting on your support to make this proposal come true.

Teachers training

Prior to this report, we have successfully conducted two training sessions for the teachers in the school. Practical conversations ranged from using the google classroom and basic computer skills for learning advancement. We aim to have more of this training sessions to bring teachers up to speed with the digital age.

Mentorship project

We passionately believe in mentoring students and exposing them to diverse careers opportunities. Our focus covers, growth mindset, leadership, career focus, STEM, Creative Arts, vocational courses and any other skills necessary to further empower them and become successful adults.

Sports Kit project

While we have successfully delivered the first tranche of sports jerseys to the school. It is our intention to extend this project to other schools/local teams in Nigeria, Ghana and any other identified countries of need.

Project manager salary

Our project manager Achenyo has led the projects in Nigeria and has done so with dedication & empathy. She has built an incredible relationship with the girls, their families and with other stakeholders in the local community. Her consistency has enabled our organisation grow from strength to strength and we are confident she will oversee the projects listed above successfully.

It is already a difficult time for many disadvantaged families who are barely surviving due to the fallout of the COVID-19 pandemic. Many have already withdrawn their kids from school, especially the girl child. This portends great danger for gender empowerment and equality if we do nothing to help.
