In Durumi Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) Camp in Abuja, women and children are living in extreme poverty and hunger, surviving on less than N1,000 a day. Many families cannot afford basic needs such as food, healthcare, education, or even sanitary products for menstrual hygiene. Through a recent Needs Assessment Survey by Inclusive Development for Women Foundation (IDWF), these women shared heartbreaking realities using unsafe materials like rags during menstruation, suffering untreated infections, losing children to preventable diseases due to lack of medical care, hunger and struggling daily to survive without any stable source of income. This campaign seeks to raise N5,000,000 to economically empower 50 internally displaced women in the camp. Each Displaced woman will receive N95,000 as seed capital to start or expand small businesses such as tailoring, food vending, and petty trading. While the remaining balance of N250,000 will be used to provide business training and capacity building, monitoring, mentorship and business support for them to ensure sustainability of interventions and businesses Many of these women already have skills like tailoring, hairdressing, food vending etc. but lack the financial resources to utilize them. By supporting this campaign, you are helping them move from dependency to self-reliance. This is not just about survival, it is about restoring dignity, hope, and the ability to build a better future.
The conditions in Durumi IDP Camp reflect a deeper crisis of poverty and neglect. Women and children are not only displaced they are trapped in a cycle of hunger, poor health, and economic hardship. Without money, these women cannot afford food, healthcare, or basic hygiene products. Many are forced to adopt unsafe coping mechanisms, including using unhygienic materials during menstruation, which leads to infections and long-term health complications. Children are out of school because their mothers cannot afford fees, and families are unable to access medical care even in emergencies. While short-term interventions like food or sanitary pad distribution can provide temporary relief, they do not address the root cause which is lack of economic power. This campaign focuses on a sustainable solution: economic empowerment. By providing seed capital, we are giving these women the opportunity to generate income, support their families, and regain control over their lives. At this critical stage, intervention is urgent to prevent further deterioration of their health, wellbeing, and future prospects. Empowering these women is not just support, it is a sustainable pathway out of poverty.
The ?5,000,000 raised will be used to empower 50 internally displaced women in Durumi IDP Camp with ?95,000 each as seed funding to start or scale small to medium businesses, while the remaining ?250,000 will be used to provide business training, capacity building, monitoring, mentorship, and business support to ensure sustainability. This support will enable them to engage in income-generating activities such as tailoring, food sales, and small-scale trading, providing a stable source of livelihood. With this income, the women will be able to feed themselves and their children consistently, access healthcare and pay for medical treatment, purchase safe menstrual hygiene products, support their children’s return to school, and improve their overall living conditions. The impact goes beyond individual beneficiaries, as each empowered woman supports an entire household, creating a ripple effect across the community. This initiative will reduce dependency, improve health outcomes, and restore dignity among displaced women and their families. By contributing to this campaign, you are not just giving money but creating sustainable change and helping break the cycle of poverty in Nigeria.
