I am seeking funds for the EduSafety Initiative project which aims to establish a secure and conducive learning environment. The project will be implemented at Saint John's Anglican Primary School in Agodo, Ogun Waterside, Ogun State, Nigeria. As a Teach for Nigeria fellow assigned to the Agodo community, I've observed that the school lacks complete fencing, and even the existing portions are in poor condition. The funds raised will be allocated to the construction of perimeter fencing and the procurement of a canoe boat for students at Ibu Community High School in Ibu. This will involve completing the fence and purchasing two canoe boats for the students.
In several low-income communities, the pursuit of education is intertwined with a distressing lack of safety measures within school premises. With a year and a half of experience in the teaching profession, I have witnessed children enduring the consequences of insufficient infrastructural development, dilapidated classrooms, and torn uniforms. The unsafe learning environment often forces kids to flee from school. In 2018, a tragic incident occurred where two innocent children lost their lives, victims of an intruder who gained access to the school premises. The images of that dreadful event left me with an indescribable sense of coldness. These children died due to the absence of a secure learning environment. Since that day, my sole focus has been on constructing perimeter fencing for the school. Why is this crucial? It's vital because, without action, another child may suffer a similar fate. The tragic events at Saint John's Anglican Primary School in Agodo in 2018 serve as a poignant reminder of the vulnerability faced by school children in low-income communities due to inadequate infrastructure.
The funds raised will play a crucial role in safeguarding the lives of 270 pupils enrolled at Saint John’s Anglican Primary School, Agodo. Among various benefits, the fencing will ensure the safety of teachers within the school premises. Parents, reassured by the complete fencing, will readily send their children to school. Learners can engage in their studies without fear, knowing that the school is secure from potential intruders. Additionally, students in Ibu can continue attending school even during the rainy season. Ultimately, the primary aim is to protect the lives of these children. I hope we can see a reason to extend a hand of support to those kids whose voices are not heard.
