There are two things that everyone can agree on when it comes to homeless people: they need help, and no one knows exactly how to help them. There are so many different organizations and initiatives that aim to eradicate homelessness or at least mitigate its effects, but none of them have been successful yet. However, there is a key reason why these efforts keep failing: we’re focusing on the wrong things. We all want to know what the best way to help homeless people is; after all, it’s their lives at stake. And yet there are so many articles out there that focus on trivial details instead of the real issues. We try to answer questions like “What do homeless people spend their money on?” or “What should you give a homeless person during the holidays?” as if those answers would be enough to solve the pandemic of homelessness in our society.
Why do we keep failing to help homeless people?
There are many reasons why homelessness has become such a serious problem in society. However, they are also the very same reasons why it’s so hard to solve it. Let’s go over each of them in turn. Homeless people are extremely vulnerable because they lack the resources and connections to get help when it’s needed. This means that problems that can be dealt with relatively easily for the rest of us become life-threatening for them. They are at risk of diseases and infections because they have very limited access to health care, and they have to engage in dangerous activities to survive. Homeless people are also facing discrimination in all aspects of their lives. They are often treated as subhuman because they don’t have a home or a job. All these factors mean that homeless people need help more than anyone else. They can’t help themselves, they lack the connections to get the support they need, and they are in constant danger of losing their lives. Yet we are failing to provide them with what they need most. How can we start helping them, then?
What is currently being done to help homeless people?
Many organizations are doing great work to end homelessness. They run shelters, provide medical care, and help people find jobs and affordable housing. This is why we don’t see as many homeless people on the streets as there used to be. However, these efforts are not enough to eradicate the problem. Most of the initiatives that are currently being taken don’t solve the core issues of homelessness. They only treat the symptoms. Shelters help people who haven’t found a place to live yet, but they do nothing for people who lost their homes. Medical care is needed by the sick, but it doesn’t help those who are still healthy.
Where should our focus be instead?
Homeless people are not lacking any one specific thing. No one solution would solve all their problems at once, and that’s exactly what makes the situation so complicated. Homelessness is a complex problem that affects all aspects of a person’s life, and it can’t be treated with a single solution. People become homeless for many different reasons and they have many different needs. That’s why the best way to help them is to find out exactly what they need and then give it to them. We need to stop trying to find the one perfect solution to homelessness and instead do our best to provide for all the needs that exist.

The reason why these efforts keep failing is that we’re focusing on the wrong things. We’re trying to find the one solution to solve all the problems that make people homeless, but there is no single solution. We need to stop looking for a silver bullet and start helping people with what they need.
