women rights in Nigeria

Women’s right in Nigeria has been non-existent for a while now but thankfully some non-governmental organizations are working tirelessly to ensure that women’s right are expressed and not suppressed.

Below are 5 NGOs working and fighting for women’s right in Nigeria.

WORKING TO ADVANCE SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY EDUCATION FOR AFRICAN WOMEN (WAAW FOUNDATION)

The WAAW Foundation is an international non-governmental organization foundation founded in 2007 on a mission to serve as a means to empower women and encourage them to pursue a career in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) through training and entrepreneurship opportunities. This foundation also disburses funds in form of scholarships and grants to African women at various institutional levels.

They have a vision of a world where young African girls are empowered with the opportunity to innovate through technology and dare to identify with careers that are predominately male concentrated.

SHE LEADS AFRICA

She Leads is a growing community of African women that was established in 2014 with the sole purpose of empowering young women by providing the inspiration and information needed to grow and improve their businesses and career.

They run programs that help young females unlock their full potentials and accomplish their goals by building strong networks and instituting entrepreneurship mindset.

THE MIRABEL SEXUAL ASSAULT REFERAL CENTRE

The Mirabel center is Nigeria’s first sexual response center providing support to sexually violated individuals- both men and women. The center ensures that accurate information on rape prevention and response are available to every individual across all age groups.

They provide free medical and psychosocial support to survivors of rape and sexual violence while working hand in hand with the police to ensure that perpetrators are prosecuted under the law.

STAND TO END RAPE

Stand To End Rape is an initiative that advocates against rape, assault, or any other form of sexual violence.

This initiative uses its platform to create awareness about sexual violence and its dangers like stigmatization, depression, or even death. They provide counseling opportunities to victims and survivors. They also run several campaigns that target victims of sexual harassment in tertiary institutions and provide educational content on sexual violence and the roles we play to ensure total eradication.

GIRLS NOT BRIDES

Girls Not Bride is an international movement with imprints in over 100 countries around the world, including Nigeria. This non-governmental organization seeks a renewed world with gender equality where women and girls can enjoy equal opportunities with boys and men to express their full potentials in every aspect of their lives.

They are on a mission to prevent child marriages and support children that are already in one. They aim to serve as a voice to vulnerable girls that have been taken advantage of and provide financial and emotional support to girls at the risk of child marriage.

This list does not cover all the NGOs that work with women and fight for their lives but it does show how much work is been done by these organizations and several others just like that.
